If you've just drilled a new well or moved onto a property with a new well, you've likely noticed mud and sediment in your water. Don't worry, it's very common for water from a new well to contain a lot of drilling mud and sediment at first.
One reader recently asked which system would be the most effective at treating the sediment-filled water coming from his new well.
A sediment backwash filter would last for many years and require virtually no maintenance, but would probably not remove all of the contaminants in your new well water. Instead, we recommend a sediment backwash filter as a pre-filter before a Pro-OX iron filter.
The Pro-OX iron filter will remove iron, manganese, and sediment from your water, and does not require a filter cartridge or additional chemicals. We recommend Pro-OX because it is very effective, efficient, and durable.
The Pro-OX media inside will last you more than 10 years. You could also use a Big Blue 20″ sediment filter in place of the backwash sediment filter, though it will require frequent cartridge changes.
These systems are available in 1″ and 1-1/4″ pipe size and one advantage to using them are that you will not see a pressure drop, even with multiple systems installed.
See the diagram below for an idea of how the Pro-OX (or MangOX filter) might be installed:
Note that this diagram does not include the sediment backwash filter, but does include a water softener after the iron filter. A water softener would be beneficial for anyone experiencing excessive hardness, i.e. over 10 grains per gallon, in their water.
We're sure that these systems will give you the best water possible from your new well. You can reach us on Facebook, at support@cleanwaterstore.com for any further questions or comments you may have about well or city water treatment systems.
