Q. How Does it Work?
A. The Water Heater Odor Killer is a special type of Chemically Resistant Rusco 3/4-60 HT-F. All you have to do to kill the odors is to open the filter, pour in hydrogen peroxide and turn water back on.
Q. How does hydrogen peroxide kill odors in my water heater?
A. As soon as the peroxide enters the water, it oxidizes and eliminates the sulfur odors by adding oxygen to the water. Within minutes the peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen.
Q. Is peroxide dangerous?
A. No, the 3% peroxide available at any drug store or pharmacy will quickly break down into oxygen and water, leaving no chemical residue.
Q. How fast does it work?
A. Allow the water to soak for at least a couple of hours, then turn water back on.
Q. How do I add it to the water heater and what is the Rusco Filter (Model 3/4-60 HT-F) for again?
A. Shut off water before the Rusco Hot Water Filter and open a hot water faucet after water heater.
By hand, unscrew bottom sump on filter and add 1 cup of drug-store bought 3% hydrogen peroxide (peroxide also sold separately here)
Turn water back on and run hot water for several minutes
Allow water heater to sit for 3-4 hours
Q. Wait, why can't I just use any cheaper plastic filter as an Odor Heater Killer then?
A. You could theoretically but those don't work well near hot water and are not chemically resistant. We also sell the low cost plastic filter housings as well. The problem we ran into with those is that our customers want to install these on the cold flex line, directly leading to their water heater and it is not a good idea to have plastic housing this close to the water heater, as hot water can and often does back up through thermal expansion, filling the plastic housing with hot water.
This can cause the housing to fail. If one were to install a swing check valve though, between the water heater and the plastic housing, it should not be a problem.
This unit costs more, but it can withstand hot water as well as it is designed to handle chemicals. That is, concentrated chlorine or peroxide will not affect or degrade the special plastic. It also functions as a spin-down fast flush filter, so it can also be used to keep sediment and grit out of the water heater, without ever having to change a filter cartridge!
